The performance takes place in the MP_art café gallery in Novi
Sad, Serbia, during the closing of the exhibition MP_exp_15
PAIRS. MP took up position behind the auction table. First
P explainde the aim of the auction and the auction's protocolle. Than
auction started.
The aim of the performance was to indicate two phenomena. A first phenomenon
is art market in Serbia, which does not exist on the way that art market
could be. Second phenomenon is more psychological one, the needs of people
to possess pieces of art works on whom they are presents (the case of
the exhibition Pairs). These two phenomena explain, on the example of
the auction, almost all relations in art world in Serbia, the poorest
country in the region. People purchase piece of art only if it is so extremely
cheap or if they have much more money that they need. First group of people
are buying art rarely, or never buy art. Second group of wealthy people
(‘transitional reaches’) are buying ‘respectable kitsch’, which are fancy
and glamorous and dictated by some commercial dealers and galleries. Art
collecting is another phenomenon…
The performance ended when all of 48
photos pass the auction process. Than P gave concluding remarks and M
finished administration and calculate income.
Among others, one important question arise after the performance: who
really need art except artists?
